Events in Monaco

The small and mighty Principality of Monaco holds some of the most celebrated events in the world. In just over 2 km2 Monaco hosts motorsports, show jumping, concerts, top league football, basketball and even a world athletics games.

Below you will find details of some of the most coveted ticketed events in the world. There is something for everyone and people owning properties with views of Port Hercules get to enjoy a lot of them from their front row seat on their balcony.

Formula 1 Grand Prix

The Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco is possibly one of the most famous and glamorous events in the world. It’s certainly the diamond in the crown of the Formula 1 season. It’s famous for attracting celebrities from all over the world who want to have the thrill of rubbing shoulders with the drivers at parties following the race. 

The course is laid out over Monaco with tight turns and tunnels, making it an extremely difficult race for the drivers to navigate. During the event there are fashion shows featuring the race drivers, auctions, yacht parties with famous DJs and global icons in attendance. 

When the attendees are taking a break from the mix, they choose to spend time at one of the famous local beach clubs, taking helicopter flights to Saint-Tropez to meet up with other friends or simply just winding down on their yacht.

The World Rally Championship Monaco 

Another famous event for motorsport fanatics is the WRC Rally Championship which has taken to the streets and villages outside the Principality for over 100 years. The event holds the title of being the most unpredictable course in the series with mountain conditions in winter causing all sorts of difficulties for the drivers.

The Historic Grand Prix

The Historic Grand Prix in Monaco takes place every two years and is the event of the year for classic car enthusiasts. It’s a chance for spectators to see their favourite cars of the past hammering down the start finish line located in the Port of Monaco. The event usually takes place a few weeks before the eagerly anticipated Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Formula E Grand Prix 

The Formula E Grand Prix also comes to Monaco in alternating years, with super high-tech engineering in an event that may come to be the future jewel in the motorsporting calendar. The cars look very different to their Formula 1 cousins and have a very interesting sound: have you heard one before?

Football

Monaco, although small in size, has one of the best football teams in the French Ligue 1. Top flight football in the Principality brings thousands of people from all over Europe and the local derby with neighbours OCG Nice is often one of the most eagerly anticipated games in the French Riviera sporting calendar. The team play at Stade Louis II, located in the Fontvieille district and has a capacity of 18,523. The Prince brought in Parisian architects to build the complex. The work began in May 1981 and ended in 1984, and required 120,000 m3 of concrete, 9,000 tonnes of iron and 2,000 tonnes of steel structure on a median land reclaimed from the sea. The complex was inaugurated on 25 January 1985 by Rainier III.

Athletics

The World Diamond League series pays a visit to Monaco each year and takes place at the previously mentioned Stade Louis II. The event is often known for record breakers with Genzebe Dibaba achieving what many had believed to be unachievable, breaking the 1500m world record with a time of 3:50.07.

World Show Jumping Championship

One of the most glamorous events in Monaco is the International Show Jumping competition which takes place in Port Hercules against a backdrop of superyachts. Residents of Monaco often love this equine event as they get a chance to watch the best in the world on their doorstep. Those with a balcony on the port can simply set up their evening aperitif and watch the competition.

Arts

Whilst sports in Monaco are beamed out to billions of screens across the world, there is also a whole host of arts events that are more private, with some accessible by invitation only with Monaco Residents getting first pick.

Music

Every year celebrated musicians from around the world make a stop off in Monaco and perform either in the Grimaldi Forum (a purpose built arts space) or at various other locations such as the Prince’s Palace, the Casino Square and Port Hercules. Last year Celine Dion was due to hold a performance with tickets as easy to find as the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow… this in the end was cancelled due to COVID. Other notable performers include; Elton John, Lady Gaga, the Pussycat Dolls and Bob Sinclaire amongst others.

Art

Monaco is home to some brilliant art galleries, with The Grimaldi Forum each year transforming into an art exhibition with artmonte-carlo, the sister fair of artgeneve. Here you can see works of some of your favourite contemporary artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Alexander Calder. 

Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (MMNM) also hosts events throughout the year with various exhibiting artists.

Auctions

Monaco is also a place where you can see some of the world’s most famous objects, art, jewellery, watches and cars being auctioned off to the highest bidder. Sales held by ArtCurial amongst others take place throughout the year in the Hotel Hermitage’s grand reception rooms with items being displayed pre-sale around Monaco. The ArtCurial auctions are held twice a year, once in the winter and once in the summer. This year's winter auction will take place between the 15th and 19th of January at the Hôtel Hermitage.

Theatre and ballet

Theatre and ballet in Monaco is thriving, with travelling troupes performing at some of the small theatres dotted around the city and also at the Grimaldi Forum. The Monaco Ballet Company (Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo) also travels the world and has performed classics such as Swan Lake.

Fireworks

Each year Monaco makes a bit of a bang by holding the World Firework Championships in Port Hercules. There are displays in the evening which are spectacular and timed to music which adds a theatrical element to the performances.

Yachting

Each year the most famous and prized yachts from around the world travel to Monaco for the Grand Prix, the Monaco Classic Yacht week and the Monaco Yacht Show. During the Monaco Classics week you can walk to the harbour wall and watch beautiful sailing yachts bouncing on the waves, jibing and tacking into port. The Monaco Yacht Show in late September is the largest of its kind in the world and attracts enthusiasts from all over.
