The Art of Pushing The Boundaries

Whether in terms of technology, design or performance, nothing is too good for superyachts, which have made the Mediterranean their playground. And they are taking ever greater account of environmental issues.

Those who have had the chance to visit a designer's studio or, better yet, one of the shipyards from which the superyachts originate, will be able to testify: technical research, innovation and avant-garde reign supreme in this world that is as confidential as it is dynamic. "Yachting has always been about pushing the limits," confirms Tim Davis, Burgess Yachts' marketing director (CMO). Whether under power or sail, the aim is to match the demands of naval engineering with those of the client-owner in terms of comfort and pleasure.

Old Europe, and more particularly its Mediterranean coastline, seems to be the natural playground for this maritime passion whose origins date back to the middle of the 19th century. The Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show close the international season of major international boat shows every year in September. Potential clients are faced with the dilemma of choosing between two trends: on the one hand, super and mega motoryachts with transoceanic autonomy and increasingly extravagant equipment for ultimate luxury, and on the other hand, sailing yachts in the great British tradition that have been reinvented to become true Formula 1s of the sea. "Regardless of the propulsion method, we see new, more environmentally friendly technical solutions being developed every year," says Tim Davis. This is particularly true for the engine, which still represents 85 to 90 percent of the market.

A Two Stage Development

Superyachting has indeed been able to convert to new engines, especially those combining diesel engines and generators. The future is probably, as for the automobile, in the fuel cells which would allow to cross the oceans thanks to hydrogen, in a perfectly clean way. Even sailing ships are making great strides, based on solar panels and generators driven by water or wind, reducing to zero (or almost) the external energy inputs needed to power these floating palaces on a daily basis.

THE yachting lifestyle is truly rewarding but requires a great outlay of funds. Yet many persue such a lifestyle due to the vast rewards involved. It's usually a two-step process," says Tim Davis. The majority of our clients, whether they are renting or selling, discover yachting by being invited by friends or business associates. This allows them to become familiar with its uses. The atmosphere on board a yacht, the art of living and the sporting elegance are therefore key elements in ensuring a successful experience. Modern superyachts are designed as private floating islands where guests expect five-star service," concludes Tim. This is another area where we have to push the envelope every day!
