Sporting passions. The French affair with Tennis

There is no denying the popularity of Tennis in France.

Spectators flock to the world famous Roland Garros centre in Paris to witness the French Open and the French Riviera similarly draws the crowds with the nearby Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters impressing visitors with its breathtaking setting.

With such notable French players from both today and yesteryear, a nation’s sporting passion has made a huge influence on the rules, language and fashions of the game, Deuce, service and the Lacoste brand are just a few examples.

Historians date the origins of tennis back to 13th century French monasteries. This game then evolved into “Royal” Tennis following popularity in the French Royal Court.  In fact the traditional narrow indoor court is still intact at Versailles and as a result of royal popularity was no doubt carefully selected as the location of the announcement of the French Revolution (also known as Tennis Court Oath).

2021 has a fantastic offering of tennis within France, with Paris playing host to the French Open from the 24th of May through to the 13th of June and then the Rolex Paris Masters in November.
