In 2019, Chengdu’s GDP reached RMB1,701 billion in 2019, an increase of 7.8% year-on-year (YoY)—1.7 percentage points (ppts) and 0.3 of a ppt higher than the national rate and the Sichuan provincial rate, respectively. The growth value of the tertiary industry reached RMB1,115.5 billion, an 8.6 ppts YoY increase. In addition, the total citywide investment in fixed assets increased by 10.0% YoY.
The COVID-19 outbreak brought significant challenges to China as a whole and Chengdu in particular; both national and local authorities imposed movement restrictions, shutting down travel networks to quarantine more than billion people to halt the speed of the virus’ transmission.
