In focus: Birmingham

Birmingham is commonly referred to as the UK’s second city (although others may lay their own claim to the title) and is one of the youngest in Europe, with around a third of the population aged under 25. So as it steps into the international spotlight this week, what is the city like to live and work in?

While it may be young demographically speaking, it is steeped in history and offers something for everyone. The central focus of Birmingham is Victoria Square where, architecturally, the juxtaposition of old and new is clear to see. The classical Town Hall and Renaissance-style Council House beautifully contrast with the modern corporate buildings within the thriving business district. In winter, Victoria Square becomes a key setting for the traditional Christmas markets which run the length of New Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

At the end of New Street are the eye-catching buildings of the Rotunda, a cylindrical high rise that is Grade II listed, and the famous Bullring shopping centre. Just behind the Bullring and St Martin’s Church lies Digbeth, considered a trendy part of the city with start-ups and flexible working spaces.

The Jewellery Quarter, meanwhile, is further advanced in terms of development and price growth. Forty per cent of all jewellery made in the UK is made here and it’s still home to Europe’s largest concentration of jewellery makers.

Today the Jewellery Quarter is not just a place of work, but a cool urban village, particularly popular with young professionals, first time buyers and those working in the creative industries. Its proximity to the Central Business District and key employment hub offers the possibility of a walkable commute and there’s a thriving restaurant, bar and music scene on the doorstep.

Well-known to fans of the sound of leather on willow, Edgbaston, a desirable and affluent leafy suburb on the edge of Birmingham, is home to Cannon Hill Park, Warwickshire County Cricket Club, and new residential development for future generations. When it arrives, the West Midlands Metro extension - part of the city’s pedestrianisation - will bring with it connectivity and easy access into the heart of Birmingham’s city centre, making it a perfect commuter location.

Here, we have selected some winning new homes currently for sale across the city.
