In the latest instalment of our Meet Our Expert series, Chris Clifford, Head of Cornwall, explains the unique charm of the county and why he falls for it over and over again.
From Georgian rectories to coastal estates, contemporary new builds and even a former WW2 airbase, Chris Clifford has seen it all during his 16 years selling prime property. For him, it’s this diversity of properties, landscapes, and stories that are part of Cornwall’s magnetic charm.
“The magical thing about Cornwall is that a short drive can take you to an entirely different landscape. There’s a depth of history wherever you are, from Captain Bligh to King Arthur,” he says. “To me, it feels like you’re never more than 10 minutes from an adventure.”
Since the housing market reopened following the first lockdown in 2020, the market has been in what many have called a frenzy. Last year, prime coastal locations including Devon and Cornwall recorded average price growth of 15.6%—a significant rise.
While the tide may be turning in other parts of the property market, the appetite for seaside living remains as strong as ever: “In all my career, there’s never been anything like the market we are currently experiencing. We’ve witnessed an unceasing appetite to buy.”
It seems that people are moving here for all sorts of reasons. It’s no longer just holidaymakers investing in second homes, it’s people and families laying down roots and experiencing the magic for themselves.
“We’ve met with every type of buyer,” Chris comments. “Those looking for first homes, second homes, downsizers, upsizers and a number of internationals including the USA.”
With its dramatic coastline, unspoilt countryside and outstanding homes, it’s no wonder that so many are drawn to Cornwall. For Chris, it’s this rural idyll and closeness with nature that makes his role so appealing.
“I think I have the best job in the world,” says Chris. “Only last week, I was on the terrace of a property overlooking Carbis Bay, watching dolphins playing in the sea below. It really doesn’t get better than this, these are the things that make Cornwall so special to me.”
With days like that, it’s not hard to see why Chris falls in love with the area and his work over and over again.
