In 1786 Robert Burns famously addressed a poem to the haggis. According to some experts, his intention was to mock the rich French cuisine that was the fashion in Edinburgh at the time.
Whatever his motivation, Scots all around the globe will celebrate Burns Night this week in honour of the great bard’s birthday on 25 January, with Burns suppers ranging from a cosy gathering of friends to large indulgent events, full of pomp and circumstance.
Here is a selection of properties currently on the market in Burns’ homeland. They include a castle with arguably one of the most historic dining rooms in the country, an Aberdeenshire home with two dining rooms, a boutique guest house that would make a luxurious family home and a farmhouse in Dumfries where Burns famously built Ellisland Farm, now a museum.
From the contemporary to the historic, all have plenty of space to enjoy a night of poetry, conversation and song while tucking into what Burns called ‘the great chieftain o' the pudding-race’.
