Hot in the home counties: why Windsor has retained the royal seal of approval

Sitting serenely on the banks of the River Thames, the picturesque town of Windsor has an association with royalty that stretches back almost 1,000 years.

Windsor Castle is the oldest occupied castle in the world and remains very much a working palace, regularly used as a private royal residence as well as for state visits and other important occasions.

The continued desire for more space and a change in lifestyle that was triggered by the pandemic has led to prime price growth of 9.4 per cent in Windsor and the surrounding villages, over the two years to March 2022.

Particularly popular with buyers from the capital, Windsor has a lovely cosmopolitan feel and a strong sense of community that’s often described as similar to a London suburb.

The Golden Triangle – a compact area in the heart of the town with Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian housing stock – remains the most popular neighbourhood, being a stone’s throw from the town centre and the famous Long Walk.

Interestingly, there isn’t as much riverside property as one might expect – homes overlooking the water are rare and in high demand. Much of the open space around the river meanwhile is owned by the Crown Estate and Eton College so is unlikely to be developed.

A fine selection of national and independent shops make Windsor the perfect choice for a spot of regular retail therapy, while food lovers are spoilt for choice with lots of cafés and restaurants (a visit to Sebastian’s Italian is highly recommended).

Both Windsor & Eton Central and Windsor & Eton Riverside railway stations offer regular services of under an hour into London Waterloo and London Paddington – ideal for those who need to balance working from home with a commute into the office. Terminal 5 at London Heathrow is also just under 10 miles away by road.

The excellent schooling, close knit community and vast amounts of easily accessible green space – a family favourite being the 5,000-acre Great Park which is open for members of the public to enjoy free of charge – make Windsor a great place to raise children. However it’s just as popular with professional couples looking for a trendy town centre apartment or with those wanting to downsize to a period terrace.

With a historic feel complemented by modern convenience, Windsor offers a superb quality of life that has genuine universal appeal – it is little surprise that it has retained the royal seal of approval.
