In the latest instalment of our Meet Our Expert series, Hugh Maconochie, a director of Savills Country Department, discusses why he loves the “endlessly challenging” role of selling high-value homes in the northern Home Counties.
Although based in the capital, Hugh is never happier than driving along country lanes meeting clients and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for his area with prospective buyers.
Considering his renowned reputation, it may come of a surprise to learn that Hugh didn’t start out in property. He spent five years as a head-hunter in the City, London’s financial centre, before a friend suggested pivoting to estate agency.
“Looking back, it makes sense: both careers require an ability to read people and understand their motivations but now my focus is country houses,” says Hugh. “I’m a country boy at heart; it’s a perfect match.”
Today, he sells extraordinary houses throughout the northern Home Counties – from Henley to Hertfordshire. He puts his success largely down to good, thorough research. That is, truly gaining a deep understanding of why people fall in love with the area and what compels them to make a property purchase.
“I’ve made it my business to know all aspects of the area inside out – its schools, pubs, topography and transport links – and love the huge variety it offers,” says Hugh.
Even for properties of this magnitude, Hugh knows they are often much more than a financial asset. Working with someone to sell their home, or find a new one, is a privilege and a process that has to be managed delicately.
“We’re handling very valuable assets and the emotional investment is often considerable. Yet at the same time, we see buyers entering new chapters of their lives, and that gives a tremendous buzz.”
