An orangery, conservatory or garden room brings the outside in, enhancing our connection to nature while adding natural light and space – particularly welcome during the winter months.
It is believed the orangery originated in the Renaissance gardens of Italy as far back as the 1500s to protect citrus trees and fragile fruits during cold snaps, while the traditional fully glazed conservatory dates from the Victorian era. Garden rooms, still with large windows but a solid roof, became popular in the Fifties and Sixties.
Today thanks to advances in construction and glass technology, many glasshouses can be enjoyed year round. At this time of year, they're also the perfect place from which to watch the autumn leaves turn from green to golden.
