The rise of the annexe

Often affectionately referred to as a 'granny annexe', ancillary accommodation is now about much more than simply keeping a watchful eye on elderly relatives. Recent experiences have encouraged many people to reassess what they want from their homes and properties with extra space in the form of an annexe are in high demand.

A traditional annexe is an integral yet fully self-contained part of the same property, with its own kitchen and bathroom facilities together with a separate entrance, allowing occupants to come and go as they please without disturbing the rest of the house. However the term is also increasingly used to describe additional space in a completely different building, such as a room converted above a detached garage or outbuilding.

Enquiries for properties with an annexe have risen significantly since lockdown restrictions were relaxed and reasons vary. Multigenerational living remains popular, particularly among younger families with grown up children or those returning from university who want greater independence while saving for their own home.

Increased space for home working, be that an office or perhaps a therapy or consultation room, is now high on people’s agenda too and an annexe provides the perfect answer: somewhere separate to lock yourself away from the main house without having to create a makeshift space in an extra bedroom or dining room.

There is also the added flexibility. Should the annexe no longer be needed for dedicated office space it can be converted into a gym or studio or rented out as a holiday or longer term let for extra income. If all else fails, it can even be re-incorporated back into the main house, adding further to the square footage.

That said, anyone considering adding an annexe – or changing its use – should speak to their local planning authority to see what permissions they require or if there are any implications in regards to council tax.

The multitude of uses makes annexes incredibly versatile spaces and their popularity looks set to continue for the foreseeable future. Here’s our selection of some of the best currently available.
