6 of the Best...New homes in a vernacular style

Vernacular homes are a much-loved component of the English landscape. Typical of the area, these homes are built in the main from materials that reflect the customs and traditions of their surroundings and offer an essential ingredient of local distinctiveness.

Responsive to change, they can be landmarks for technical innovation and versatility, though conservatism remains a key part of their character.

Today, there are a wide variety of new build vernacular properties built to emulate the local style or recreate the original architecture of a particular building.

One such example, Beckford Gate, pictured above, is built using the honey-coloured stone typical of the Cotswolds, reflecting the area’s Georgian heritage. The Links in Porthcawl, which opened its doors 150 years ago as a convalescent hotel for miners supported by Florence Nightingale, offers an example of a historic building restored to reflect the original.

Here is our selection of the best new homes built in a vernacular style currently on the market.
