Why I love: Barcelona

It has been disconcerting and saddening to see empty squares and shuttered streets around the world, and our hearts go out to all those affected, wherever they are.

For a while, we may all need to stay grounded. One day, we'll be visiting piazzas filled with selfie-takers again and eating in bistros brimming with animated chatter.

While we wait, we reflect on what draws us to the places we love.

This city was made for strolling. Whether it’s down the bustling Las Ramblas to the sea, through the narrow medieval streets of the Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter) or window shopping along the sublime Passeig de Gràcia (the Sunday brunch at the Mandarin Oriental is legendary), there is something to delight the senses round every corner.

From Gaudí to Gehry, the architecture of Barcelona is simply stunning. The exterior of the Sagrada Familia is iconic but it’s the interior that takes your breath away, the light from the myriad rainbow coloured stained glass windows bouncing off the white floors and the incredible detail in the stonework.

For an architectural astonishment without the crowds, head to the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau. This former hospital is a Modernist marvel and has been exquisitely restored.

Even the pavements are a piece of art. Called Panot, the concrete tiles were designed by Puig i Cadafalch and Gaudí, among others, and cover approximately 5 million square metres. The four petal flower often used has become one of the symbols of the city.

I can’t wait to stroll those streets again.
