Why I love: Guernsey

It has been disconcerting and saddening to see empty squares and shuttered streets around the world, and our hearts go out to all those affected by Covid-19 and lockdown, wherever they are.

While we wait to travel again, this series reflects on what draws us to the places we love.

And there is light at the end of the tunnel: next week Guernsey – the subject of today's blog – will enter stage 4 of lockdown meaning a return to many aspects of normal life on the island.

I know unique is an over-used word but I feel Guernsey can stake a very strong claim.

Geographically and culturally the island sits between France and the UK. It’s part of neither, but embraces both and the result is a beautiful, idiosyncratic hybrid. We have our own government and we make our own laws which means there are many nuances which belong to Guernsey alone.

There’s much here to cherish from coastline, landscape, history and intriguing culture to the £1 note still in use today as well as our blue post boxes (apart from the one red one in Union Street, St Peter Port, that is).

But what I love most is the community and the people. To epitomise the spirit of trust and cooperation on Guernsey, you don’t really have to look any further than what’s known locally as hedge veg.

All over the island, those who grow for a hobby or have a surplus of fruit, vegetables or flowers put them out in boxes or a roadside stall with an honesty box. Always popular, they are proving particularly so now as shoppers try to avoid queuing in supermarkets – and some people are adding extras like spare tyres and puncture repair kits to help those who are cycling for exercise.

There’s a wonderful balance here. Guernsey has an area of only 62 sq km and it’s possible to walk the circumference in a day. It’s big enough that there are always new people to meet but you are never far away from someone you know.

If you are looking for beauty, it’s all around, though the skyline and waterfront at St Peter Port is a picture postcard in itself and the south coast cliffs are a must-see. For me though, Fermain Bay and a walk through the bluebell woods in spring is one of life’s truly great pleasures.
