Travel provides inspiration for the latest interior trends

The ease of travel means the world is becoming ever smaller, so it's not surprising that this year’s autumnal interior design trends draw inspiration from across the globe.

Classic seasonal earthy tones – deep corals, rusty oranges as well as hints of green, both in the fabrics used and through introducing plants into the home – are popular as you might expect at this time of year. But we also anticipate a pull towards vibrant jewel colours, with deep reds for striking feature sofas and rich blue hues adding depth to walls, for example.

Statement prints are in vogue and a key trend to look out for is Ikat, a technique in which bundles of yarn are bound and dyed before they are woven into cloth. Some designs are making a comeback such as the paisley patterns of the 1960s and 1970s.

There’s been a move away from slick interiors in favour of a more relaxed, country chic inspired by the likes of the Pig hotels. And we are increasingly finding that people who divide their time between London and the country want a similar rustic look and feel in both homes which enables them to alternate accessories and furniture between houses.

Here’s a rundown of what’s in this autumn:

• Prints including Ikat designs and Aztec inspired patterns. These can be clashing as long as key colour themes are carried throughout the scheme.

• Busy patterned wallpapers and bold printed oversized headboards.

• Softening industrial interiors with plush velvets.

• Aged leathers and wood. The woods can be mixed and tend to be reclaimed.

• Nothing with a highly polished finish.

• Mixed lighting levels – pendant lights not spotlights, lamps with detailed bases and patterned fabric shades.

• Patterned floor tiles and herringbone wooden floors.
