Moving from the city to the country

Are you considering moving to the country? Here are four questions to help you decide.

What can country life offer you?

People move to the country for many different reasons. Schooling is a big factor and for younger buyers heading out of the city may provide an opportunity to get on the housing ladder. Whatever the driver is for you, whether it’s returning to your roots or finding a different and more enjoyable quality of life, make sure you’re clear about what you want from your move.

What will you be leaving behind?

Swapping your city home for the country doesn’t mean you have to leave behind all the prized elements of urban life. While you might be saying goodbye to your favourite coffee shop or a much-loved book store, there’s a vibrant atmosphere in the country and lots of artisanal businesses and exciting places are opening up along our local high streets. Whatever it is that you can’t live without, consider whether your chosen destination can offer a great alternative.

What will your commute and work life look like?

There are, of course, a number of myths that still surround moving out of the city. One is that you will spend the rest of your working life on a commuter train. But the revolution in flexible working, with so many of us now working from home, means that this is no longer the case. If flexible working is not an option or the commuter life isn’t for you, think about what local employment has to offer.

Have you considered renting first?

Leaving the city can be a big move and some may discover it’s not for them after all. So if you’re unsure whether country living will live up to your expectations and needs, why not try before you buy? Renting first allows you to get to know the area without fully committing yourself.

The move from city to country can be daunting, and naturally there are some serious considerations to think about. But with lots of time and a good deal of energy you can make it happen – and we’re here to help you do it.
