Iseldone has changed a lot since the settlement appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086. Today it’s one of London’s most sought-after and appealing areas for both buyers and renters. It’s somewhere people choose to put down roots and our clients often choose to stay very local in their search. Many young professionals head to Islington and Highbury for their starter flats, then upsize to a larger home as their family grows.
The area is often characterised by its elegant Georgian townhouses, but there is also a wealth of Victorian homes and garden squares, accompanied by new-builds and loft-style developments.
Garden squares are popular with families, most – including Myddelton Square, Lonsdale Square, Canonbury Square and Thornhill Square – offer delightful pockets of greenery, while Highbury Fields is Islington’s largest park and has a wide range of sporting facilities including tennis courts.
Lonsdale Square in Barnsbury has striking Tudor Gothic Revival architecture and its tall terraced houses tend to attract residents for the long term. Thornhill Square is a leafy oasis with grand architecture and a historic church in the gardens. Alwyne Road has Grade II listed villas with leafy views, while Highbury Place on Highbury Fields is highly prized for its Georgian properties.
The average second hand sale price of a home in Islington is £1,144,949, while detached houses cost an average of £1,449,193 and those with large gardens, on a garden square or on Regent's Canal will command an even greater premium. Flats in the area cost an average of £713,436.
A younger crowd is drawn by the area’s vibrant neighbourhood feel, weekly farmers’ market and independent cinema. There’s an eclectic array of restaurants, pubs and bars on Upper Street and Camden Passage is a great spot for independent boutiques, antique shops, market stalls, restaurants and bars. Pubs such as Compton Arms (once frequented by George Orwell),The Drapers Arms and The Albion are hugely popular with local residents and those working here alike. There's a thriving arts scene with many theatres and the renowned Sadlers Wells which hosts ballet, modern dance and family productions.
The City is within easy walking distance for a quick commute and the West End is just 10-15 minutes by Tube, with Angel station served by the Northern Line providing links both north and south of the river. Highbury & Islington is on the Victoria Line as well as the London Overground. It’s also close to King's Cross from where it's easy to head out to the country for a weekend escape.
