Savills study for Masterpiece 19

Masterpiece: a study in studies

Studies have had their place in the nation’s homes for centuries. It’s within these four walls that key decisions, breakthroughs and discoveries have been made and some of our best-loved literature has been written.

Much more than simply a practical, functional area, a study owes much to its interior design and décor which helps create a setting that encourages both productivity and creativity. And, in an age where more of us are working from home and even entertaining or hosting business associates from our studies, it’s a room which is growing in importance. It has ascended the list of property must-haves for buyers and tenants, in many cases overtaking a dining room or spare bedroom.

So when we were appointing a design studio to conceptualise a space for the Savills stand at Masterpiece London Art Fair, we decided that a study would reflect and bring together many of the aspects of how we live and work today.

Drawing on traditional influences, current trends and global styles, the salon – designed by design studio 1508 London – celebrates tailoring and craftsmanship. At its heart is a Linley desk, with equal emphasis on the entertaining areas, the Charles Burnand chairs and drinks cabinet giving a nod to the designs of some of the world’s top-end properties.

Studies tend to be located where they can benefit from maximum natural light and desks are usually positioned with a window view. Design elements are then used to create a sense of grandeur or simply to act as a focal point: a statement wallpaper, such as the de Gournay in our study, for example, or elegant bookcases lining the walls.

Highly important but seldom celebrated, studies can be among the most exquisite rooms in the house. We’d love it if you joined us in ours this year at Masterpiece.
