Homes straight out of a Jane Austen novel

Jane Austen, one of the world's most loved authors, spent the majority of her life in the historic and beautiful county of Hampshire, more than 200 years ago. Interest in her always peaks at this time of year when the Jane Austen Regency Week (22-30 June) takes place in the village of Chawton and the nearby market town of Alton.

Chawton is where the author lived for the last eight years of her life and where she is thought to have written most of her novels, including Pride & Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma. Her former home is now the Jane Austen's House Museum but the nearby Dower House (pictured above), an elegant Regency property which Austen would have known well, is currently on the market.

Of course, it isn't just 'Jane Austen country' that boasts fine Regency homes. The Regency period was a time of opulence and there are examples of its picturesque architectural style all over England. Here are four of the best currently on the market.
