6 of the Best...Penthouse homes

In the 1920s, the New York City building code defined a penthouse as 'an enclosed structure on or above the roof of any part of a building, which is designed or used for human occupancy.'

Today, the term generally refers to a luxurious top-floor apartment. And while they originated in New York, penthouses can now be found around the world.

What is it that makes a penthouse so desirable? There’s the obvious: their height means they provide glorious views, frequently offering unobstructed panoramas of a city’s skyline. They are also often the only apartment in a building with a large terrace, as well as being the quietest, due to the lack of neighbours above. No wonder penthouse apartments are at the top of so many buyers' wish lists.

Here are six of the best penthouses currently on the market.
