Green is not just for Christmas

Green is a colour traditionally associated with the festive season. But there’s no reason why green shouldn’t appear within our homes too – and not just at Christmas. In fact, where interiors are concerned, green is fast becoming a fashionable alternative to grey and white.

Start with the front door. As well as making a statement to the outside world, a front door can give an insight into what lies behind it. In the psychology of colour, green symbolises nature and the natural world, but it also represents tranquility, good luck and health, which makes it the ideal colour for the gateway to our homes.

Moving inside, the use of colour in spaces where neutrals previously held sway has been increasing, with green kitchens becoming popular. Since green is the colour of nature it works well in all seasons, but in the winter months, when it's too cold to venture out, splashes of green indoors can feel like bringing the outside in. Green is also soothing – which makes it a great choice for bedrooms – and adds warmth to existing schemes.

Which shade of green to go for? This season there has been a definite move towards earthier greens for walls. In its new colour launch, Farrow & Ball, for example, announced two variations: Treron, a dark grey-green, and Bancha, a darker version of its popular Olive.

From earthy olives to vibrant emeralds, and all shades in between, there’s most certainly a green that will suit every corner of your home. The best advice for introducing colour, is to do it little by little, to ensure it works in the space and, more importantly, that you like it. And remember, green is not just for Christmas.
