The first recorded use of wallpaper was in China in 200 BC when rice paper was glued to the walls. In Europe it dates from the 13th century and had become so popular in Britain by the time of Queen Anne’s reign in the 18th century that a wallpaper tax, payable on all painted, patterned or printed wallpaper, was introduced in 1712.
The popularity of wallpaper waned during the 1970s and 80s, but there was a resurgence in the 2000s and it’s now a key interior design trend.
Colours and patterns can bring life, character and expression to a room. It can also make it unique. When it comes to viewings, I find that the most important thing to leave the potential buyer with is a memorable impression. If the house has a room unlike any other they’ve seen, that will generate conversation and will ensure they go home with that property at the forefront of their minds.
Equally, when buyers are picturing themselves living in a property, the homelier it looks the better. Statement wallpaper can create this effect and by putting up wallpaper in key living areas or bedrooms, it can also make a home feel more put together and thought through.
This holds true for any type or age of property – from modern apartments to period family houses and everything in-between. And with so many designs out there, there’s bound to be one that delivers the look and feel you’re after.
