As the world’s attention turns to Windsor and its historic castle and royal parks this weekend, it’s easy to forget about Windsor’s other most notable landmark – the River Thames.
From Dorney in the west to Datchet in the east, properties on this famous river often command premiums similar to those overlooking the castle. And the closer to the water, the higher the premium: Savills research has found that homes within 100 m of the river can cost up to 39.5 per cent more than those within 1km. Added to which, properties away from the town centre often have their own private moorings, which command a premium of their own.
The great thing about this stretch of the river is that homes are so varied, with everything from new build townhouses and apartments to large detached country houses and period cottages. That said, these properties don’t come to market very often, which gives a sense of prestige to those fortunate enough to live here.
Although river views are certainly part of the attraction, it is the lifestyle that living on the water affords that really appeals to buyers here. On Monday nights there is a boat that takes locals up the river to enjoy the racing at Windsor Race Course. Those lucky enough to have a mooring can enjoy the river on their own watercraft. And we shouldn’t forget that the river does have its own royal connection, with HM The Queen’s annual swan upping taking place in July. During this event the Royal Swan Uppers collect data on all the Crown's mute swans, ensuring their conservation and good health. It’s always an exciting time for the locals of Windsor and crowds gather to watch this historic occasion
Windsor itself is a great place to live, with facilities that include two stations, a theatre and several hotels. But as tens of thousands descend on the town on Saturday, it's worth remembering that there's a much more peaceful day playing out just along the river.
