The Sky's the limit: the rise of the 21st-century atrium

Dunlop Manor, Ayrshire

Atriums – or atria – have provided light-filled open spaces in both residential and commercial properties throughout their long and evolving history.

Originating in Roman houses, where they functioned as open-air formal reception rooms, atriums traditionally housed the altar to the family gods and also contained pools for collecting rainwater for household use. Later, the design was used in Christian basilicas, forming an open central courtyard which was often built in front of the place of worship.

The 19th century brought the industrial revolution and with it advances in iron and glass manufacturing. Such developments influenced the design of the modern-day atrium with its customary expansive glass roof. Moving on into the 20th century, atriums underwent a revival as architects and homeowners realised the value of a space in which they could relax and recharge, and which also offered ventilation and natural light.

Today, the term atrium is generally used to describe a large hall or entrance area which is lit with natural light from above. Architects and designers find them particularly appealing because they can be interpreted in a variety ways and adapted for a wide range of uses, whether to provide a beautiful focal point or to bring the outdoors into an inside space.

Dunlop Manor in Ayrshire, winner of the best renovation project in Scotland (June 2016), is an excellent example. Set in an A-listed mansion, the sympathetically refurbished atrium provides an opulent space in the heart of the development, reflecting the Scottish baronial splendour and Georgian craftsmanship of the original house. At 50ft high (15.2m), the space is intended to impress, extending up to the square pyramid glass lantern at roof level which floods the atrium with natural daylight.

The atrium may have orginated in the Roman age, but for homeowners, architects and designers it's just as relevant in the 21st century.
