Refurbishing a country house? Now is the time to think about security

Country house gates

When a country house is being refurbished, it’s normal to appoint either a building surveyor or architect. An interior designer or garden designer will often have input at this stage, too. The services of a security consultant, on the other hand, are frequently overlooked – and this is a mistake since while it is relatively simple to incorporate security features during a reburbishment, doing it retrospectively is likely to be expensive, disruptive and obtrusive.

Prevention is better than cure

An overall security appraisal at an early stage will make sure any security measures are coherent and integrated, designed into the infrastructure and fabric of a building. While technology can definitely assist, over reliance is not the answer – it should be one of a series of measures.

Technology versus traditional methods

Improvements in technology have made sophisticated security systems a great deal more affordable – CCTV, for example, is much cheaper and picture quality much improved, with remote access through a smart phone or tablet possible from just about anywhere in the world. Similarly, automated gates and entry systems are now commonplace, even in relatively remote areas.

However, more traditional security methods can still be effective when installed and used correctly. Don’t dismiss the idea of a burglar alarm just because there are now a number of more technologically advanced alternatives. An alarm is easily linked to the service provider, which will monitor for any triggers. Having a locally based keyholder is also worthwhile.

Good perimeter security is essential, whether it’s fences, gates, signage or hedges. Hedges, for example, are a great deterrent where species such as hawthorn or pyracantha are planted. The presence of a large dog can be equally effective.

Keep it (relatively) simple

Above all, systems employed should be user-friendly and simple to operate. If the technology is not used properly or deemed too complicated and not used at all, it serves no purpose and will simply be a waste of money.
