Listed properties are our living history

Barometer Living History

Do you live in a listed building? Clive Aslet, writing in the latest edition of Savills Barometer magazine, feels your pain – and your joy. Clive is the proud owner of a Grade I listed house in Ramsgate and knows that while caring for a piece of Britain’s history can be hard work, the rewards are enormous.

Contrary to common belief, says Clive, you can make changes to a listed building: “My advice to owners wanting to alter a listed building would be: proceed with tact.” But, he continues, “the pangs suffered during a project will end up as nothing more damaging than good dinner party stories."

These listed houses are some of the finest on the lettings and residential market.

Clive Aslet is Editor-at-Large of Country Life. He has just published his first novel The Birdcage, set in Salonika during the First World War.
