Once a vital network for trade, Britain’s canals and their heavily laden barges have given way to boating and activity of an altogether more leisurely nature. And living nearby is proving popular, offering a balance for those who love the water but still want be close to city centre amenities.

Canals aren’t just urban infrastructure, of course, flowing through glorious countryside too. Equally, many of them are wonderful wildlife corridors, thanks in no small part to the sterling efforts of the Canal & River Trust, which looks after 2,000 miles of waterways.
