A pick of the best homes near cathedrals

The UK is home to 42 cathedrals of varying shapes and sizes, from medieval masterpieces to mid-20th-century designs.

Contrary to common belief, not all cathedrals are in cities and not all cities have a cathedral. In fact, there are 18 cities without a cathedral in the UK, including Bath and Cambridge, and 13 towns with a cathedral but without city status, including Guildford and Oban.

While being close to a cathedral won’t necessarily increase the value of your home, premiums can be seen in some areas, such as Lincoln, Salisbury and Winchester. According to our research, Lincoln showed the highest premium, with an average house price of £479,985 within 300m of the cathedral, 156% more than the £187,636 average price within the city. In Salisbury – which is home to the tallest cathedral spire in England - the premium is some 73%, with an average price of £549,115 near the cathedral and £317,622 elsewhere in the city. And in Winchester, the premium is 58%, with a city average of £601,344 and houses within 300m of the cathedral averaging £950,556.
