The Georgian building boom left us with a wealth of wonderful architecture inspired by antiquity. From grand country houses to sweeping crescents and elegant townhouses, Georgian properties were built to be spacious, comfortable and full of light.
Known for their symmetrical facades and features including sash windows, ornate fireplaces, panelling and breathtaking staircases, the Georgian period started with the reign of George I in 1714 and officially ended on the death of William IV in 1837. However, the term Georgian is often taken as roughly equivalent to the 18th century.
Savills has sponsored The Georgian Awards for 20 years, an annual event dedicated to the celebration and protection of this important and enduringly popular part of our heritage. The Georgian Awards are organised by the Georgian Group, which campaigns for the preservation of buildings and planned landscapes of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
This year’s winners were announced on 1 October, at Inner Temple Library, London, where the awards were presented by John Goodall, architectural editor for Country Life.
