Changes to permitted development rights have made it easier in recent years to convert a barn to a more contemporary style, often combining the character and features of the original with the practicality and comfort of a new build. Rustic exposed beams are frequently complemented by modern touches such as underfloor heating, mezzanine floors and large windows.

Described as a classic example of effective property recycling, advances in technology also mean conversions are more energy efficient than in the past. Those carried out to a high standard sympathetic to the original building’s history also tend to retain their value.
