In Focus: Petworth

At the heart of the South Downs National Park is the attractive market town of Petworth.

With its cobbled streets and impressive range of shops, pubs and restaurants, the town has a strong sense of community. It’s also known for its antiques and arts establishments, with 37 of them within a half-mile radius.

What to do in Petworth

Petworth has a charming, rural setting – and there's lots to do, including the monthly market, various community groups and organisations, regular film nights in the town hall and, of course, the annual Petworth Festival. The world-class arts festival takes place each July and attracts thousands of visitors from far and wide.

Later in the year is the popular Literary Week, when the town welcomes a host of writers, directors and presenters, and in November, there’s Petworth Fair, a traditional funfair and street fair. You can also visit the magnificent and historic Petworth House, its beauty beloved by the artist JMW Turner among many others.

Beyond Petworth: towns and villages in the area

Beyond the town are popular villages for those seeking a more rural lifestyle, including Lodsworth, Byworth, Graffham and Lurgashall. Meanwhile, the bigger towns of Petersfield and Horsham, and the cathedral city of Chichester, sit in a triangle surrounding Petworth and offer further facilities. To the north, Haslemere has enduring appeal as does Pulborough, both of which also have mainline stations to London.

The South Downs National Park is a beautiful backdrop to the town, along with some notable vineyards which have been popping up in the area over the last ten years or so.

Property and house prices

Property within the town tends to be particularly sought after by downsizers who want to be part of a community, with plenty of amenities within walking distance. The surrounding area is also a draw for families looking for excellent schools, which we have in abundance, including Seaford College, Highfield and Brookham School, and Conifers School in Midhurst.

In terms of house prices, a three-bedroom property with parking and a garden in the town will cost around £1m, while a larger family home will be around £1.5m. Beyond the town, a family home within a pretty village or more rural setting will cost anywhere from £1m-plus for a large property with a good sized garden.
