6 of the Best...country houses in the city

What is a ‘country house’? Interestingly, there isn’t any one definition. According to the Cambridge English Dictionary, it is ‘a large traditional house in the countryside, especially one that has belonged to the same family for many years’. Indeed, historically, country houses were owned by aristocratic or noble families.

Today, most people can conjure up an image of a country house without needing to define it. In my mind, it is a detached residence, with traditional architecture, probably Georgian or Victorian. Moreover, it provides an oasis from the hustle and bustle of daily life, set within private, possibly walled, gardens.

Of course, strictly speaking, being situated in the wilds of the English countryside is a fundamental characteristic. However, on occasion we might stumble upon something special – a country house-style home that is, conversely located in the urban landscape.

One such example is Weston Lea in Bath. A magnificent five bedroom Regency home, wrapped in over an acre of historic gardens and grounds, along with a detached four bedroom coach house.

The other country house-style residences showcased below all offer an opportunity to enjoy the grandeur, the elegance and the tranquillity of country house living, without ever stepping foot outside  the town or city.
