Royal London: Westminster In Focus

Westminster is home to many of London’s most iconic landmarks, milestones in the history of the city, and cornerstones of British royalty, military and democracy. The area is brimming with picturesque parks, royal palaces, historic buildings, and, of course, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, the most famous clock in the world.

Four of London’s eight Royal Parks are located here - Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Green Park and St James's Park. The area is considerably enhanced by its plentiful green open spaces, lakes (complete with resident pelicans) and proximity to the River Thames. Westminster is a place to be in the heart of the city without the hubbub and it is for this reason it remains an enduringly desirable enclave loved by those of all generations.

England’s most famous royal palace, Buckingham Palace, official residence of the monarch since the reign of Queen Victoria in 1837, and St James’s Palace, one of London’s oldest royal palaces, built around 1531 to 1536, are to be found in the borough. It is also home to Westminster Abbey, the national treasure and church where coronations of monarchs have taken place since 1066.

For a dose of culture, there’s the Tate Britain art gallery, Curzon Cinema, the Royal Albert Hall and The Other Palace theatre.

Steeped in over 1,000 years of royal and government history, Westminster is revered for its exquisitely preserved examples of 18th and early 19th century architecture. Elegant and historic Grade II listed townhouses are popular with families, flats in handsome redbrick mansion blocks are sought after by first-time buyers and older homeowners alike and modern, glass-fronted riverside apartments and penthouses with private roof terraces attract young professionals.

Westminster School is world renowned for academic excellence and the University of Westminster and the University of Arts London are also well known on the global stage.

Westminster has excellent transport links around London and to Heathrow, Gatwick and City airports. St James's Park and Westminster underground stations are both at hand, as is the river boat service from Westminster and Tate Britain piers. Victoria Station has both underground connections and mainline rail network services including the Gatwick Express.
