The British School of Monaco is opening this September and we at Savills wanted to take a look at what’s behind this exciting new addition to the principality’s diverse education sector.
Founded by Luke Sullivan and Dr. Olena Sullivan-Prykhodko, the British School of Monaco is born directly from their experience running the Modelex Education Centre in Monaco. Having worked with over a thousand international families and supported a number of local schools with various needs over the last decade, Luke and Olena have developed a deep insight into both the needs of such a diverse community of residents, and also the opportunities and challenges of running a school in such a multicultural environment.
Modelex’s work is characterised by highly personal education programs, and high-quality, experienced teachers recruited from the UK. It offers full time 1-1 schooling for students from 6-18 years old, after-school and holiday tutoring, applications support to the top UK and Swiss school and also to the top UK, US and worldwide universities. Through the experience of running the Modelex Education Centre, Luke and Olena realised that they were able to have a tremendous impact of students 1-1, but were limited by the physical number of hours they were able to spend with each student. To solve this they would need to spend more time with their students every day, and the only way to achieve this was to set up a school. It was from this point that the seed of the British School of Monaco was planted.

The curriculum
The British School of Monaco provides a 100% English curriculum education, with French taught on the side as a first or second language depending on the level of the student. This is the only school in Monaco to provide a 100% English education, and with a clear alignment with the British education system and British educational traditions. Given the huge cultural and linguistic diversity in Monaco, the British School of Monaco is aiming to develop in its students a confident and sophisticated use of English, regardless of what their mother tongue might be.
Values
In addition, the British School of Monaco places an extremely strong emphasis on its values (“Integrity and Responsibility to oneself, Respect and Kindness to others, Courage and Curiosity to the world”), in order to create a community that is governed and defined by a set of values that are accepted by all members of the school community. In addition to its values, the British School of Monaco has a set of learning characteristics that it focuses on in each lesson: Reflection, Resilience and Adaptablity. These three characteristics are essential for students to become successful individuals in a complicated, challenging and ever-changing world. On top of this, the British School of Monaco has written from scratch an outstanding curriculum in all subjects, based on best-practice curriculum delivery, the values and priorities of the British School of Monaco and the diverse and international context of Monaco.

Sports and mental wellbeing:
The British School of Monaco is committed to giving its students an outstanding British education, and firmly believes that this is best achieved and can only really be worthwhile in the context of physical and mental wellbeing. As a result of this, the British School of Monaco will provide a comprehensive sports and extra-curricular programme that will take advantage of the full-range of facilities on offer in Monaco. There is a particular focus on team-sports, due to its connection to the ‘community’ aspect of school that is so important, and also to the school values that should manifest themselves on the sports field just as much as in the classroom. There is also a focus on ‘Reflection’ within lessons, it will also include specific mindfulness lessons within its curriculum, to help students from a young age to focus on and be able to regulate their own internal feelings in different situations. This is exactly the kind of rounded, holistic, excellent education that the British School of Monaco wants to deliver.

In summary, the British School of Monaco offers a uniquely family-run and uniquely British-curriculum school within the context of the principality, using expert and experienced teachers brought over from the UK, selected for their passion and impressive skillsets. It is clearly an exciting addition to Monaco, complementing the French and International schools and offering further choice to families in the principality.
