The trend of converting barns into homes is nothing new. But the lifestyle drivers that have fuelled the housing market since the pandemic have led to a surge in popularity for property in the countryside – with many people deciding to up sticks in search of more space and plenty of fresh air.

Changes to permitted development rights have made it easier in recent years to convert a barn to a more contemporary style – with the very best combining the character and features of the original with the practicality and comfort of a new build.

Many now have the ‘wow-factor’ – with double height rooms, impressive vaulted ceilings and open plan areas that provide a great sense of space and light. Rustic exposed beams meanwhile are frequently complemented by modern touches such as underfloor heating, mezzanine floors and large windows.

Described as a classic example of effective property recycling, advances in technology also mean conversions are more energy efficient than in the past. Those carried out to a high standard sympathetic to the original building’s history also tend to retain their value.
