Why Méribel and Courchevel are back on top this ski season

Jérôme Lagoutte of Savills French Riviera & French Alps has an unrivalled career in real estate and boasts an exceptional knowledge of the Three Valleys property market. Here, he discusses the highly anticipated season ahead and how demand for the exceptional settings of Courchevel and Méribel is being met by the latest developments and innovative design.

What is the outlook for the 2021/2022 ski season?

We have all experienced the disruption the global pandemic brought to everyone's routines and habits. However, we have been delighted to see that winter sports holidays are still very much sought after and, despite a significant absence, holidaymakers are returning to the mountains with skiing high on their agendas.

How has the pandemic affected the sale of Alpine properties?

As major players in the Courchevel and Méribel real estate markets, we can report that the pandemic has not slowed down the appetite for Alpine property or the rate of real estate transaction activity. On the contrary, it has accelerated it, reinforcing the appeal of the mountains and the lifestyle on offer here.

Despite the long months of closure, our agencies have handled a notable increase in both interest and transaction levels across the Three Valleys and with just one month to go before our ski resorts open for the 21/22 season, we are finalising rental contracts every day for clients of all nationalities, eager to make the most of this stunning location.

How are developers tailoring their offer to suit current requirements?

As activity has returned to our beautiful setting, new developments have started construction and existing buildings have undergone major renovation to ensure a contemporary and wide-ranging choice of properties.

Many of the major developers have sought our research-based insight into changing buyer behaviour to ensure their projects meet the latest requirements – things like clever design, spacious layouts and the very latest technical and environmental developments have all been incorporated.

Two exceptional examples are So Pure, a prestigious new penthouse development in Méribel Mottaret, and a development of tailor-made penthouses in the Bellecôte area of Courchevel 1850, featuring clever design layouts to maximise space and natural light.
