Raising a glass to UK viticulture

Wine from UK shores has come a long way in the last 20 years. Domestic viticulture is now an internationally recognised business which has grown rapidly to meet demand.

There are hundreds of commercial vineyards across the UK, many of which are in the South East of England, one of the warmest, driest and sunniest areas, providing a good environment for grape growing. The quality of the end product relies heavily on the choice of land, with sheltered, south facing slopes away from the coast, but no higher than 100m above sea level, providing the ideal conditions.

Setting up your own vineyard can take anywhere from five years to see a return on your investment, taking into account finding the right land, planting vines, setting up the necessary equipment and building up a brand. Established vineyards with mature vines and a fully operational winery are particularly sought after and we have seen an increase in interest from buyers seeking such opportunities over the last few years.

So as we celebrate English Wine Week (June 20-28), an annual celebration organised by WineGB, the national association for the English and Welsh wine industry, what better time to savour a collection of vineyards currently for sale?
