Scottish castles to capture your heart

Scotland's castles were built originally with protection and defence in mind. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were among the first to buy one as a private home and following the redevelopment of Balmoral a great number were renovated or completely rebuilt for ‘modern’ living.

Imitations of fairytale castles began to emerge across Scotland, with large country houses becoming adorned with Scottish Baronial-style turrets and being re-named 'castles'.

There are estimated to be more than 2,000 castles still standing in Scotland and they continue to attract buyers, with around 10 sales taking place each year. The exceptional circumstances we find ourselves in today have slowed the housing market as a whole considerably, yet the romanticism, history, seclusion, and, of course protection associated with these rarified properties continue to attract interest from all over the world. In April searches on Savills website for castles in Scotland increased by 30 per cent on the month before.

So if you've always hankered to capture a castle of your own, here is a selection of the best currently for sale.
