Moving to the Côte d'Azur

Making a big move is always daunting yet exhilarating at the same time - adventure awaits and new opportunities abound. Life on the Côte d’Azur will not disappoint, as it is definitely action packed year round with sailing, celebrity, culture and cuisine all on the agenda.

Whilst multiple reasons are behind a move to the French Riviera the most often cited is the exceptional quality of life here, alongside the numerous working opportunities and the global interconnections available. Indeed, the region boasts the third busiest airport in France with new routes always opening, most recently an additional flight to New York and China. In addition extensive development (with equally impressive funding) tempts industry relocation, boost talent sourcing, eco credentials and tourism.

So life on the Côte d’Azur is definitely rosy (or rosé, well we are in France!) yet it can often be difficult to see that bigger picture when your head is full of potential mishaps and maybe’s. So how can you ensure your step into life on the French Riviera is as smooth and stress free as possible – learn from someone who has already done it!

The internet is full of hints and tips on moving abroad, from arranging visas to sorting your healthcare or local currency but what about on an everyday level? Many people choose to “trial” life in another country through long term travel, sabbaticals, office swaps or holiday rental. These are all excellent but what is truly invaluable is a local source, been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

To help you out, four expat colleagues from the Savills French Riviera team shared their experiences of moving to the Côte d’Azur (and the bumps along the way) and it is clear to see their passion for the area and way of life.

Read their stories below and gain an insight into this wonderful part of the world and just what is in store for you. Adventures await.

Name & role in Savills

Jenny Baker, Deputy Office Manager & Compliance.

When did you move to the Côte d’Azur?

In 2015, for what was initially intended to be a short career break!

What was the reason for your move ?

After working as a commercial contracts/ regulatory compliance lawyer, I was looking for a change of scenery and a fresh challenge. I had studied French at university so decided to take a year out to perfect my skills. After a stint in the hotel industry I was lucky enough to be offered the job with Savills, via a contact and good friend from a local expat group.

What is your favourite thing about living on the Côte d’Azur?

The colours, sights and sounds.

By day, the bustling markets, vibrant flowers, the terracotta and yellow houses of the old town against a backdrop of the azur blue sea.

By night, the pastel sunsets, street artists and the impressively lit villas and boulevards.

What is your favourite location on the Côte d’Azur and why?

Old town Antibes, not far from Cannes. I love the city of Nice but Antibes has a calmer feel to it, with its quaint pebbled streets, market squares and houses carefully decorated with Mediterranean flowers and pastel shutters.

What is your favourite property on the market at the moment and why?

Now that is a difficult choice...

The first property below is situated in Beaulieu and overlooks the buzz of Monaco.I love the high ceilings, clean lines and elegant decoration that is typical of many of the luxury apartments on the Riviera.

And how could I not include this beautiful villa from Terre Rouge - just look at those shutters. Terre Rouge is an exclusive private residence complete with outstanding sporting facilities, hotel, security and serious green credentials.

What do you wish people knew about the French Riviera ?

Most people, myself included before I moved here, tend to associate the Riviera with expensive shop, yachts and glamour. That is one element but there are also stunning coastal walks and hilltop villages where you can escape to nature.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to move?

Don’t let the language be a barrier! There is a strong expat community across the region to offer support. Many businesses, shops and restaurants will have at least one English speaking member of staff. I have been impressed with the Savills Riviera team who are comfortable discussing technical details in English as their second language.

What do you wish you had known before you moved ?

How easy it is to travel around the region using public transport.

The trains and buses are extremely efficient and reasonably priced so you can explore the area without the need to hire a car. The Nice tramway has also recently been extended and runs from the airport to the city centre which has made a huge difference!
