Moving to the Côte d’Azur.

Making a big move is always daunting yet exhilarating at the same time - adventure awaits and new opportunities abound. Life on the Côte d’Azur will not disappoint, as it is definitely action packed year round with sailing, celebrity, culture and cuisine all on the agenda.

Whilst multiple reasons are behind a move to the French Riviera the most often cited is the exceptional quality of life here, alongside the numerous working opportunities and the global interconnections available. Indeed, the region boasts the third busiest airport in France with new routes always opening, most recently an additional flight to New York and China. In addition extensive development (with equally impressive funding) tempts industry relocation, boost talent sourcing, eco credentials and tourism.

So life on the Côte d’Azur is definitely rosy (or rosé, well we are in France!) yet it can often be difficult to see that bigger picture when your head is full of potential mishaps and maybe’s. So how can you ensure your step into life on the French Riviera is as smooth and stress free as possible – learn from someone who has already done it!

The internet is full of hints and tips on moving abroad, from arranging visas to sorting your healthcare or local currency but what about on an everyday level? Many people choose to “trial” life in another country through long term travel, sabbaticals, office swaps or holiday rental. These are all excellent but what is truly invaluable is a local source, been there, done that and got the T-shirt.

To help you out, four expat colleagues from the Savills French Riviera team shared their experiences of moving to the Côte d’Azur (and the bumps along the way) and it is clear to see their passion for the area and way of life.

Read their stories below and gain an insight into this wonderful part of the world and just what is in store for you. Adventures await.

When did you move to the Côte d’Azur?

In 2008, after 7 years in Paris.

What was the reason for your move ?

The sky of Paris was too grey...

What is your favourite thing about living on the Côte d’Azur?

A very pleasant climate, numerous possibilities to spend a wonderful time without spending too much time travelling (beaches, mountains, fields of lavender, Italy, Monaco, Saint Tropez are not far) a lot of cultural events, museums, favourite place of Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Le Corbusier.. and of course the delicious “cuisine Provençale” and fabulous Rosé wine..

What is your favourite location on the Côte d’Azur and why?

I like Théoule-sur-Mer for its stunning sea views and tranquillity, Villefranche /Cap Ferrat area for amazing views, and I enjoy living in Cannes – a very inviting town with numerous interesting events.

What is your favourite property on the market at the moment and why?

My favourite property is in Antibes (Terre Rouge), a charming refurbished house for family and friends to enjoy French Riviera lifestyle.

A close second is this stylish apartment in Cannes – perfectly situated for the beaches and La Croisette, it is a moments from the activity of the Cannes film festival. Considering the rental potential in Cannes and the popularity of well located apartments for this very reason, I think this would make an ideal investment opportunity, holiday home or first home.

What do you wish people knew about the French Riviera ?

The French Riviera is paradise!
