From blue plaques to the Blues: Chelsea's got it all

The highlight of the British horticultural calendar, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, has taken place in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for over 100 years. Across five days, the prestigious event sees in excess of 150,000 visitors attend, with even more watching its televised coverage.

With so many flocking to see the very latest in the gardening world, it’s no wonder that the neighbourhood is cast under the spotlight. But what is life in Chelsea like for its residents?

Well, it’s an area with much to see and do and for that reason Chelsea is often viewed as one of London’s most fashionable addresses. It’s also home to one of the most famous streets in the world, the King's Road, which first became the heart of ‘Swinging London’ in the late Fifties.

Chelsea is still one of the most happening places in the capital, with an array of independent boutiques, designer stores and high street retailers. And of course, it also has some of the best places in London to eat and drink dawn ‘til dusk.

As far as property is concerned, the housing scene is diverse, with traditional garden squares and Victorian terraces as well as modern flats. This means that Chelsea is home to younger professionals, families and downsizers, too, who all want to live in the heart of the action.

But for those looking to buy in the area, living in Chelsea comes at a price. Buyers here can expect to pay a seven figure sum – average house prices across the Chelsea postcodes come in at around £2,406,000.*

Chelsea has landmarks and top spots to visit aplenty; the cultural, the historic and the sporting, too. A trip to Sloane Square and its local shops is a must, as is a wander around the four acres of the Physic Garden. Taking in the art displayed at the Saatchi Gallery is highly recommended and so too is a peruse of the antiques at Lots Road for one-off pieces.

On match day, there’s nothing better than hearing the roar of the crowds at Stamford Bridge, home of Chelsea FC, aka the Blues, while a tour of the area’s blue plaques will reveal the homes and workplaces of some of the nation’s most notable figures.

Once you’ve done all that, it’s time to take in the history at the Royal Hospital Chelsea with a tour led by a resident Chelsea Pensioner. But perhaps best to save it until after the floral mania of the big show itself.

RHS Chelsea 2019

David Harber and Savills are joining forces once again to sponsor a Show Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The garden, by renowned garden designer Andrew Duff, is a celebration of the environmental benefit and beauty of trees, plants and grass in urban spaces. The garden seeks to create a beautiful, sustainable woodland clearing in a city garden.
