Wentworth Club, Surrey

What makes Surrey's private estates so desirable?

As a Director in the London office, I focus on the sale of super prime homes in some of Surrey’s highest value locations such as the Crown Estate, St George's Hill and Wentworth.

But what is it that makes these locations so desirable? Here, one resident tells me what she enjoys most about living in the Crown Estate, while Marcus Bateman, membership manager at the Wentworth Club, gives me the lowdown on Wentworth.

Where did you move to the Crown Estate from and why?

Having lived in Chelsea for several years, we decided to move to Surrey in time for our daughter to start school. Having considered  a number of other nearby areas, we chose Oxshott as we could commute into central London by train pretty quickly and a taxi home after a night out only takes 25 minutes.

We felt that the area gave us what we wanted from making the move out: a village like atmosphere while also being a good distance from central London. There are also some great local restaurants, like The Ivy Cobham Brasserie or the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar and Grill and some fun attractions nearby for family time at the weekend such as Brooklands Museum and RHS Garden Wisley.

What appealed to you about the Crown Estate?

We were really impressed by the houses in the Crown Estate; they’re of high quality and there’s a real feeling of exclusivity, privacy and security which was important to us in choosing to raise our family here. With what we sold our town house in London for we were able to buy a home twice the size, with a swimming pool and an acre of garden.

Would you recommend the area to other families?

Absolutely, we have made many new friends, not only through school but also within the local community, and settled into life here very quickly. There are a number of  excellent schools in the area which was another huge draw and most have acres of land with great sporting facilities. We also love that our daughter is able to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.

How do you spend your weekends here?

For us, a weekend will often be a mix of spending time in the local woods or in the garden on one day and a trip to London for shopping or dinner the next.

Marcus Bateman: Wentworth is one of the world's best known sporting clubs but what is daily life like here?

Family and community is  at the very heart of the Club. I am the primary contact for members beyond the day-to-day, looking after them as they integrate themselves into the Club, enriching their family’s lifestyle and sporting passions.

What is it that’s so special about living at Wentworth?

The club is at the core of the Wentworth Estate and every year, the BMW PGA Championships casts Wentworth Estate onto the world stage. At Wentworth the golf courses are intertwined with the properties, bringing the European Tour’s flagship event to each resident’s front door and is embraced as a festival of golf.

For those living within the Estate or who are members of the Golf Club, there is far more to Wentworth than its perfectly manicured greens. Members also benefit from first class tennis, fitness and spa facilities. We have invested heavily across the club from our  newly renovated 18th-century clubhouse to the high-tech vacuums under the greens.

Despite these big changes, Wentworth’s focus remains centred on providing a safe and fun environment for families to spend quality time together. We want to offer our members a 'full circle' lifestyle, so whether it’s the opportunity to dust off the black tie, dine in the Burma Bar or enjoy Sunday lunch al fresco on the terrace, it can all happen here.
