Celebrating the 150th anniversary of Edwin Lutyens' birth

Britain’s architectural heritage is one of its greatest assets and Sir Edwin Lutyens one of its greatest architects. So as 29 March 2019 is the 150th anniversary of Lutyens’ birth, what better time to reflect on his influential work and career?

Lutyens gave us some of our most beautiful and inspiring country houses, public buildings and war memorials. Such is the popularity and recognisability of his work that when a Lutyens or Lutyens-inspired property comes to the open market it invariably has extra appeal for buyers.

Lutyens first came to prominence working in the Arts & Crafts style of the late 19th century. Elaborate and grand, yet also charming and cosy, his houses during this period often featured vaulted ceilings and tall, sometimes twisted chimney stacks.

In the early 1910s Lutyens expanded his work to include commercial and public commissions, many of them prestigious. He mixed creative styles in all areas of his work and while he broadly followed the Arts & Crafts direction, he experimented with his English country houses, incorporating elements of both Renaissance and Classicism.

Though many Lutyens buildings are now listed in order to protect their architectural importance, sadly so much of his work has been lost. But with rarity comes desirability and value – as these stand-out Lutyens’ inspired homes currently on the market demonstrate.
