For design purists, a true Romantic garden is one created during the Romantic Era, when landscape gardeners sought to reflect the wild, inherent beauty of nature. Humphry Repton is probably the best known proponent of this natural style.
But a garden doesn’t have to be Romantic with a capital ‘r’ to stir the emotions: it can be large or small; showy or modest. Sometimes it’s the beautiful planting that inspires the whispering of sweet nothings; sometimes it’s the obvious passion that has gone into its creation and upkeep.
The great Romantic poet, John Keats, was moved by his Hampstead garden to write some of his finest work. Perhaps one of these six properties will inspire you to do the same this Valentine's Day.
