How to have a white Christmas

If you’re dreaming of a white Christmas but don’t want to rely on the weather then why not create your own?

In the world of design, white manages to be both deeply traditional and highly contemporary. Iconic white stucco fronted buildings have stood the test of time in style terms, their simplicity often hiding grandeur within, while white is frequently used to pick out woodwork, ceiling roses and cornicing in period properties.

Keeping walls white as a contrast works well too. In cottages, for example, it helps exposed beams stand out as the focal point. Modern schemes and Art Deco designs also tend to favour white walls, ceilings and glossy surfaces which provide a crisp canvas for bold and colourful art, furniture and accessories.

From icy bright to muted and soft, white appears in a panoply of shades to suit a range of styles whether as a backdrop for colour or the main event. For a cosy look this winter try combining different textures, crisp cottons, luscious linens and chunky knits.
