Eastwood: from modest farmhouse to exquisite country residence

They say you should never judge a book by its cover. The current owners of Eastwood in East Sussex ripped the cover off and put on another that was more to their liking, transforming a modest Victorian house in an idyllic spot into one of the finest houses in the area. All this was made possible by Robert Adam, recognised both in the UK and internationally as one of the leading figures in the development of both traditional and classical architecture.

Most new owners of a pretty, turn-of-the-century farmhouse might consider a loft extension or a conservatory. Not this time. Instead, leaving the original farmhouse in situ, they built the most spectacular four-columned portico façade as well as matching wings to each side. Elements of Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-classical design have been incorporated to create a unique and exquisite country residence.

As well enormous charm and warmth, Eastwood makes an immediate impression and leaves you with a smile on your face. On arrival, you are welcomed by that fabulous façade topped with a very regal looking bronze lion. Once inside, you are warmly greeted by a central reception hall with vaulted ceiling and fireplace – very much the heart of the home.

And home it is. While Eastwood might look stately, in reality it is a very comfortable and very useable family home in a private, quiet position. Surprisingly for such tranquillity, access both to London and to some excellent schools is remarkably good.

The juxtaposition of old and new, grand and humble, really shouldn’t work – but it does. In Eastwood's case, it would seem, you really can judge a book by its cover.
