A guide to Surrey's Private Estates

Surrey's private estates

Surrey's prestigious private estates sit at the pinnacle of the UK’s property market, offering a unique combination of security, privacy and kudos in green surroundings, while being one hour at most from London’s West End.

Most are located in the north-western tip of Surrey, close to the motorway network, giving them easy access to both London and Gatwick and Heathrow airports. They are equally well placed for some of the county's finest schools. So it’s little wonder that these estates attract foreign royalty, billionaire entrepreneurs, CEOs, celebrities and an increasing number of ultra-wealthy domestic and international buyers.

While offering the ultimate in modern luxury living, the estates themselves date back to the early 20th century when they were developed on land formerly owned by important families. Wentworth, for example, was the 19th-century estate of the Duke of Wellington's brother-in-law, Ashley Park once belonged to the Sassoon family, while Burwood Park was owned by the Guinness family.

A driving force behind the creation of the estates was master builder W G Tarrant, who was responsible for both Wentworth and St George’s Hill. Described as a ‘man of vision and enterprise’, W G Tarrant built exclusive housing estates where the super-rich of the 1920s could live in a community of like-minded people in beautiful natural surroundings. Many of Tarrant’s original Art and Crafts houses have now been replaced by houses more suited to today's requirements, but his original concept abides and is what makes Surrey’s private estates so desirable in the 21st century.
