Showing your home in its best light

Lighting doesn’t just allow better visibility: different levels and tones can change the function and appeal of every room in your home.

When choosing lighting you need to consider the space in which it will be used. In a kitchen, for example, you need the light to be bright enough to cook efficiently and safely, but if you also plan to eat in your kitchen, you will want softer lighting at a lower level to create a more relaxing environment. The best way to achieve this is to have spotlights in the ceiling, with additional pendant lighting over an island or dining table.

Spotlights are also the most popular choice in bathrooms, though the most flattering light for applying make-up or shaving is wall lighting. Placing lights at head height either side of the mirror allows light to bounce off your face and give a clearer view. This also creates a softer lighting effect for when you want to enjoy a relaxing bath.

In reception rooms and bedrooms more than one lighting level is essential, as these rooms need to be able to vary their ambience dependent on the time of day and use. Consider dimmable lighting, wall lights and lamps to ensure you have the ability to adapt the brightness. You want to be able to create an inviting and comforting environment at the flick of a switch.

Upgrading your light fittings is also an easy way to add style though it's important to consider whether the fitting will blend well with the period of your home. For example, Industrial light fittings have been popular for a while now but they may well look out of place in older, character homes. You don’t want style to out-weigh substance.

Lighting can also provide a number of other practical functions. Aside from the obvious security benefits, apps that control lighting remotely are often used by sellers to set up their homes for a viewing in their absence. With the touch of a button, lighting can be adjusted in every room, ready for the agent's and buyer's arrival.
