There are thought to be around 500,000 buildings listed as being of special architectural or historic interest on the National Heritage List for England.

The majority of listed buildings, 91.7 per cent, are categorised as Grade II while Grade I and Grade II* are more rare. Only 5.8 per cent of listed buildings are Grade II* – considered particularly important and of more than special interest – while just 2.5 per cent are Grade I, deemed as being of exceptional interest.

The rarity of Grade I and Grade II* listed buildings ensures that examples are prized, both by their owners and also by the protection they are afforded in legislation.

While the listing means there is extra control over what changes can be made to the building’s interior and exterior, you may still be able to add an extension, undertake partial demolition or make many other alterations with the proper approval.
