London's best bonfire night fireworks

London's best bonfire night fireworks

Remember remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. London is where it all started, on 5 November 1605, as Guido Guy Fawkes’ Gunpowder Plot failed to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I.

411 years later, we still celebrate this failed attempt by gathering around enormous bonfires and watching fireworks; and where better to do it than London.

Here's our pick of the best fireworks displays this weekend for Guy Fawkes Night:

Battersea Park

On Saturday 5 November, Battersea Park boasts a huge bonfire with spectacular fireworks set to music. Gates open at 6pm, but it's recommended to arrive early to beat the crowds and wait for the fireworks with a pulled pork burger and mulled wine.

Tickets are £10 and must be booked in advance. Afterwards, follow the locals to The Woodman on Battersea High Street, with open log fires and excellent wine and beers to round off the evening.

Alexandra Palace

One of the largest displays to be found in the capital, Ally Pally's fireworks take place on both Friday 4 and Saturday 5, offering a panoramic London backdrop so you can usually see simultaneous firework displays around London.

There’s more than just fireworks, too, with children’s and adults’ funfairs, ice skating and an excellent German beer festival. You can purchase tickets in advance.

Southwark Park

Taking place on Saturday 5, watch the fireworks from the park itself, or alternatively from the other side of the river with Tower Bridge as a backdrop, reflecting on the River Thames. Tickets available online.

Blackheath

One of the largest fireworks displays, Blackheath hosts more than 80,000 people on Saturday night, with many enjoying the funfair rides in the afternoon before the show. Free to attend.

Victoria Park

Back for the first time for a few years, this is a proper local get-together, with families and friends coming from both sides of the park. This year's Sunday fireworks in Victoria will mark 350 years since the Great Fire of London, which started just down the road in a bakery on Pudding Lane and swept across the city for three days.

Crystal Palace Park

One of London’s longest running annual displays, on Saturday evening Crystal Palace Park offers a children-friendly firework display with fewer bangs at 7pm, which is followed by the main display at 8.30pm. Tickets can be purchased online.

King's College School, Wimbledon

Where most of the families go in Wimbledon, tickets are well worth the cost with masses of entertainment including circus entertainment with an aerial dance and trapeze act and fire shows. The school’s bands play before and after the fireworks and there are plenty of food stalls (the Krispy Kremes are particularly popular).

Royal Gunpowder Mills

Teach the kids about the history of the plot and why it failed at Waltham Abbey, which will host a Guy Fawkes Experience on both Friday and Saturday evenings, including costumed re-enactments of the plot and live music.

Tickets can be booked and it’s known to get busy early on, so get there in good time to enjoy the BBQ, fairground rides and science shows, before the fireworks kick off at 7pm.

Here's our pick of properties within walking distance of this weekend's fireworks displays, or better yet, avoid the crowds and watch them from the comfort of your own home.
